Supporting Max Through Crisis and Into Hope

Max first came to Provision Food Club in tears after being referred by the Job Centre. He had recently applied for Council housing but had been refused due to alleged rent arrears from a previous address. Max knew this information was incorrect, but because he cannot read or write, he felt powerless to challenge the decision or provide the evidence needed.

Max’s partner died suddenly.

Our team spent time sitting with Max, listening to his concerns and helping him put together a clear plan to gather the necessary proof. He acted quickly and was able to obtain the evidence — but before any real progress could be made, tragedy struck.

When we next saw him, Max was in an extremely vulnerable state. He had not been home or taken his medication for several days and was clearly struggling to cope with his loss. Concerned for his immediate safety, we contacted emergency services. Although Max left before help arrived, we held onto the promise he made to take his medication — something he had been avoiding for some time.

Thankfully, Max did follow through. He returned to see us the following day after visiting his GP. By this point, he had been sleeping rough for over a week, unable to face returning to his flat. His GP referred him to Creative Support, and a member of their team contacted Max directly, arranged an appointment, and accompanied him for support.

During this period, Max also accessed a free breakfast service at a local café. Working closely with the Homeless Team and other local partners, Provision House continued to support him over the following weeks. Together, we helped Max move into new accommodation, provided a furniture package to make it livable, sourced free counselling sessions, and — just as importantly — remained available to listen and talk whenever he needed someone.

Max has since told us that this support saved his life — more than once.

Today, Max continues to visit us regularly as we support him through the grieving process and help him rebuild his life. His journey is a powerful reminder of how vital timely, compassionate support can be, and how working together as a community can truly change lives.
